What is an admission?
An admission is a child moving into a home. What happens in the first days shapes the placement, and the records created at admission are the basis for everything afterwards.

</figure>Emergency admissions are where the process is most compressed and most consequential. The information that would normally inform a decision often arrives afterwards, which makes reviewing it quickly essential rather than optional.
The child's own experience of arriving is part of it. Being shown around, told how things work, and introduced properly is not hospitality, it is the start of a placement working.
Documents that must be in place — the placement plan, the risk assessments, the consents — have deadlines, and an admission at seven on a Friday evening still has them.
What goes wrong in practice
- Emergency admissions with documentation never caught up afterwards.
- Placement plan not in place within the required period.
- Consents and health information assumed to be coming and never chased.
